I sit reading a book on a nice quiet day and all of a sudden the Islanders give me something to write about. They trade a conditional fifth round pick for the rights to defenseman Dan Boyle from the San Jose Sharks. The pick becomes a fourth round pick should he sign a new contract.
I posted on Twitter “are we sure these are the same Islanders we all have come to love and is Garth just messing with the fans?” To answer that question simply, yes we aren’t dreaming but it sure feels like it. First he trades for Jaroslav Halak, signs him to a four year deal worth $18 mil, and now he has a chance to negotiate with Boyle before he hits the market July 1st.
Boyle will be turning 38 in July however it is evident that he still has a lot left in the tank. Last season he had twelve goals, twenty four assists for a combined total of thirty six points in 75 games…not bad for a player turning 38, eh?
During his 15 year career his numbers are just what the doctor ordered for the Islanders young blue-line. He has tallied 144 career goals with over 417 assists. You can argue his age all you want but you can’t argue the results.
What does this mean in regards to Lubomir Visnovsky? Is he healthy? Is he better from his concussion last season? Is this a trade to get Visnovsky a blue-line partner? The latter of those questions in my mind is a resounding yes, but I’m not a doctor or Garth Snow.
Could you imagine a d-line of:
Yikes! That looks a whole lot better than last season don’t you think? I hate demoting Hickey to the third line defense but if Visnovsky is indeed healthy where are you going to put him?
I have never been a huge fan of Garth Snow, aside from when he was still playing, but credit is due when he pulls off trades like he has. If he can lock up Boyle for two years at $6 million I think fans would approve of that and did that blue-line just got a whole lot better.
I know I always say stay tuned things are going to get interesting. Well guess what? I think I might have to change my motto…I’ll say it again though…
Stay tuned the excitement continues…
Ok well maybe I changed it a little bit. (Laughs)
Islanders aren't screwing around... First they jump on Halak, now trying to get Boyle locked. Many more moves to come, too.— David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod) June 5, 2014
