The hits just keep coming…and no I don’t mean baseball. The Islanders cannot catch a break (no pun intended) in anything they do.
Arthur Staple, of Newsday reports that John Tavares suffered a torn MCL and meniscus during the Canada-Latvia game the other day.
Talk about a HUGE blow to the team this season and an Islanders fan base that has been put through misery the last decade. Now in the wake of the Tavares news, is simply the dagger in the back., although it has seemed like that since Charles Wang took control of the Islanders franchise back in 2001.
On to the topic of the Olympics. After seeing the extent of Tavares’ injury, it has to make the NHL reconsider sending players to the Olympics. This has been a topic of discussion for a while around the league and now it appears this will be the last year of NHL playing in the Olympics. I would be shocked if they continue to go.
I’m not saying the MRI is inaccurate because it clearly shows the MCL and meniscus but you have to hope that it didn’t miss anything and there isn't more damage than just those two tears. Trust me I’m no doctor and I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I am, I’m just saying you hope the team doctors don’t find more damage when they evaluate him back on Long Island.
Another issue that arises is that they say he will be ready for the start of training camp. However, he will lose a full off-season to work out and will likely come into camp out of shape. He would likely need more than just training camp to get back to 100%.
Fans wanted to see what Ryan Strome could bring to the NHL. Guess what, you got your wish. He will likely center the top line.
Like I said at the start of this post, the Islanders cannot catch a break.
