What began as a quiet day just did a 360. The New York Islanders have dealt Forward Matt Moulson to Buffalo for Forward Thomas Vanek. The Islanders also give up a 1st and 2nd round pick.
Both players are on expiring contracts although the Islanders will likely look to extend Vanek as soon as possible.
This trade is very shocking. Moulson and Tavares are best friends and they compliment each other on and off the ice. It becomes apparent when Capuano splits them up that they do not fair as well as when they are together on the first line.
While I like the addition of Vanek, there are two problems I see, 1) Will he re-sign and 2) how will he connect with JT. Vanek is a dynamic player so there is no doubt Snow got a great player.
This team needed a shake-up but it was needed more on the blue-line and goaltending. With the addition of Vanek he will slot in on the right wing on the first line and move Okposo elsewhere.
This seems to be the type of deal that has another trade in the works possibilty.
